The origins of viticulture in these lands date back to the Etruscan era, when the vine was already being cultivated by making it climb on trees. The affirmation of Rome and the rapid growth of the city made it necessary to cultivate the vine in the hilly area surrounding the city for the needs, first of the local population and then of the legions. Since then the tradition of viticulture has never abandoned the region and the areas of Frascati, the Castelli Romani, the Colli Albani, Orvieto, and Tuscia still represent important reference points in the regional wine scene today. The success of Lazio wines is also due to the presence of grape varieties of excellent quality such as Malvasia di Candia, Malvasia Puntinata, Trebbiano Giallo, Bellone, Bombino Bianco, Cesanese, and Nero Buono. The territory has also proven to be very suitable for hosting the most important international grape varieties and today Lazio is able to offer artisanal wines that express the authentic face of the terroir.
